People buy from people so personal branding is becoming an essential part of the marketing mix for sole traders and small business owners.
Developing a recognisable identity allows you to showcase your personality, your values and provides you a platform to become a known expert in your field. If you don’t develop your own personal brand the likelihood is that someone will do it for you. So, will you take control over your online presence and create a personal brand?
What is personal branding?
My definition of personal branding is the art of creating and building a recognisable identity and maintaining your reputation online.
How do I build a personal brand?
To build a personal brand you have to understand you – and self reflection is a hard task to do. Think about what your future vision of your personal brand might look like but then involve others to get a 360 view on who you are right now to work out how to present yourself to become your future vision.
Top tips for personal branding YOU
What do you want to be known as or for? Knowing what you want people to say or think about you is a good starting point.
What do people say about you? Ask people to describe you in three words and find out other people’s perceptions. You won’t always get the truth so get a friend or colleague to do the asking for you to get a true picture.
Don’t forget the details. Your personal brand is everything from what you say, how you write to what you wear and why you turn up.
Think about Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. They have an iconic style. Think about Richard Branson. He is known for his wise words. And Sir Alan Sugar is known for his scowl and his catchphrase (you’re fired!).
The last point I want to give you is the most important – be consistent. Whatever you decide is your personal brand then live by it 247. As a self employed entrepreneur you need people to know, like and trust you and the best way to do that is to be consistent.
So, if you network then be consistent with your messaging. If you run multiple businesses then come up with a way to describe yourself that encompasses them all or choose the one that’s right for your audience.
